There was a chasm between humans and God. There was a similar chasm between the pairs of opposites. In my young, fundamentalist world, it was either one thing or the other. Things or ideas were black or white, rational or irrational, good or bad, sinful or righteous. Talk about a ‘black and white’ world!

These lists were never written down or taught overtly. It was only later that I worked out they were the background to lots of commands, rules and attitudes. It might’ve been better if they had been written down. Then we could have seen how silly or even evil these opposites were. For example, racism and sexism thrive in a dualistic world when you look at the two lists.
